  • jacquard woven in Belgium
  • Designed by Marianne Stokes (1855-1927), Morris & Co, Merton Abbey. Woven by John Martin and Gordon Berry in 1912. The tapestry was inspred by a quotation from Schiller's poem "Würde der Frauen" (Women's Worth) 1796, which appears in the upper border : "Honour the Women, they broid and weave heavenly roses into earthly life." The figures are labeled left to right : Courage, Caring, Love, Wisdom and Fidelity. Whitworth Gallery - Manchester.
